Brown’s comparison of the Cartesian idea of education and social learning in communities of practice inspired me. I have tried to juxtapose these two concepts. In doing so, it is clear to me that an infographic only allows a very simplified representation.

Something that I like about positive about multimodality is that we can approach it from a theoretical place, but it also has a great deal to offer education (and definitely digital education) as an analytical approach or simply as a concept in itself. If I’m honest, I find the theoretical work around multimodality a little dry (and often overly human-centric) however I find the principle ideas of multimodality really helpful as a way of considering how we represent and interpret knowledge in educational contexts.

Out of interest, was your decision to use an infographic here inspired by your participation in the multimodality Mooc? With its juxtaposition of colour, image, language and other semiotic material, this is a richly multimodal artefact and does help to show how on some occasions a more overtly visual approach (compared with a heavy emphasis on language) can deftly communicate a set of ideas.

Yes, partly it was certainly inspired, or rather I was inspired to start the course because I am interested in expanding my multimodal literacy. I try to use the infographic format from time to time, it is not always suitable for complex content, or you have to present several aspects in separate infographics. In this case, however, it is a (simple) comparison of two concepts.
